WATCH: In pictures – House fire in Lee Enfield Street

The fire attracted a large crowd of passersby.

A fire broke out at 15 Lee Enfield Street, Dennesig, at around 10:30 today (Thursday).

According to information gathered on the scene, children were allegedly playing with a lighter in the main bedroom.

At the time, Melissa Starbuck and her three children, including a toddler, her partner’s mother, and their dogs were in the house.

One of the children was only wearing his underpants and T-shirt when they evacuated.

The bigger dogs were also safely removed before the blaze was stopped.

When firefighters cleared the flames, the Middelburg Observer journalist saw two puppies being removed from the house by the Starbuck family and SPCA officer Prince Mokwana.

Starbuck reportedly called her partner’s sister, informing her about the fire. She quickly rushed to the scene with other people who offered to help.

People on the scene removed the gas cylinders from the property.

The fire attracted a large crowd of passersby. One passer-by said they saw black smoke from Kanonkop Spar and rushed to the scene.

The smoke could be seen metres away from the house.

Two fire department trucks arrived minutes later, after the fire was reported on emergency groups.

They helped prevent the fire from spreading to other rooms.

Social workers from SAVF Social Services were also on the scene to offer support to the affected family.
