Meyer Street road works to continue till Wednesday

Extended road works on Meyer Street, that exclude the section at Meyer bridge, will continue until next week.

In a response to a media inquiry, Sanral has confirmed that the extended road works on Meyer Street will continue until August 13.

While the repairs to the section before Meyer bridge were scheduled to be completed yesterday, Sanral explained that the contractor was unable to proceed with resurfacing the road and subsequently opening it to traffic on the said date, due to the rainfall.

The statement further said that the underlying layers are still wet and require time to dry before the road can be surfaced with asphalt.

“Proceeding to surface the newly repaired section of the Meyer Street while the underlying layers are wet will result in premature failure of this section of Meyer Street. Therefore, surfacing of Meyer Street will resume on Monday, and upon completion, the road will be opened to traffic.”

“Planned works will, however, be affected if the rainy weather conditions persist. This may unfortunately result in extended closure. Sanral is also in the process of issuing an update, or traffic advisory, through the municipality, including other Sanral roads within Middelburg, where roadworks are currently taking place.”

In addition to the section near the bridge, road works have now been extended to the section of Meyer Street, from in front of the Middelburg Observer offices to beyond the OK’s entrance in Meyer Street.

The portion of Dr Beyers Naudé Drive between Rivier- and Oos Street has also been cordoned off.

These sections were closed off this morning, and according to Sanral should be completed by August 13.

Sanral also communicated with the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality of the additional closures.
