On Saturday, road cyclists showed with their wheels that road cycling is still kicking during the Rooiwal Women’s Day cycle race near Pretoria.
Organiser Lenie Smit of Lenick Promotions clucked like a hen with a dozen chicks on the successful day. She was full of praise for the metro police who turned up in large numbers.
Hundreds of cyclists participated in the 95km, 52km and 26km races, which were presented on a safe circular route.
The Reformed Church Grootvlei at Rooiwal has benefitted from the cycle races over the years and has erected numerous structures with cycling money. The church provided delicious ‘church food’, typically offered at a bazaar.
Lenick also put a lot of effort into the prize-giving.
Middelburgers Angelique and Jurgens Steyn took on the 95km and completed the race in 3:29:26 and 3:37:37.
Former editor of the Middelburg Observer, Tobie van den Bergh, placed first in 65-69 category with a time of 1:31 in the 52km.
