Young scientists showcase their talent at Eskom Expo

Numerous other learners from Middelburg received medals for their brilliant inventions.

The prestigious Eskom Expo for Young Scientists took place last Friday at the Steve Tshwete Banquet Hall.

Numerous schools around the Nkangala District were in attendance, anxiously waiting to hear if their invention was the best of the best.

The hall was filled with eager and brilliant young scientists and innovators.

There were 285 learners present from different schools around the district, with over 210 inventions altogether.

Lots of Middelburg schools also attended, with the Middelburg Muslim School, Phumelela Secondary School, Extension 24 Primary School, Middelburg Primary School, Hoërskool Middelburg, Sozama Secondary School, Mphanama Secondary School, Middelburg Combined School, Tshwenyane Secondary School, and Khulunolwazi Primary School, all showcasing their projects proudly.

The event celebrates and nurtures the passion for science and innovation among young minds.

Various scientists showcased their ground-breaking discoveries and projects.The winners at the Regional Fair will go on to compete at a national level, with the potential for sponsors.

Altogether, 42 gold medals, 60 silver medals and 70 bronze medals were awarded.

“As an organisation, we train learners on research and innovation. Then we take them to competitions where we award them medals, certificates and electronic gadgets. We also take learners abroad and offer them bursaries. Our main goal is to train young scientists from Grade Six to Grade 12 to love science and research‚” said Innocent Marume, Mpumalanga Provincial Co-ordinator of the Eskom Expo.

Snhlanhla Skosana from Phumelela Secondary won the award for Best Innovation for his Solar Electric Nebuliser.

Hamzah Loonat from Hoërskool Middelburg won an award for Best Energy Project for his From Waves to Watts invention.

The Middelburg Muslim School was awarded a trophy for the school with the highest projects at the district expo, under Middelburg schools.
