Cemetery tour brings history to life

The South African Heritage Society visited the old cemetery in Ghofsig on Thursday, where Theo Ligthelm took them on a tour.

The society hosted its national symposium at the Middelburg Country Club this past week.

A visit to the historic Heroe’s Acre in Middelburg where the graves tell of a different time and world. The cemetery was visited as part of the National Heritage Symposium hostes in Middelburg. The symposium ended yesterday with the cemetery being the last stop on the full weeklong programme.

Various blue plaques were visited and interesting information was shared.

The Middelburg Heritage Society has installed 51 plaques all over town over the past three years.

It was clear during the tour that the blue plaques not only reflect the history of the area, but are a voice from the grave that keeps touching stories alive.

Tobie van den Bergh

Tobie started as a journalist in September 1975. He was appointed editor of the Middelburg Observer in 1982 where he worked until he retired in 2024.
