SLOW DOWN: Municipality announces imminent road closures throughout Middelburg

Many roads flooded as heavy rains continue.

The municipality says its disaster management team are currently assessing whether certain roads will be closed.

The authority implore residents to exercise extreme caution on the roads.

Many roads have been flooded, with rain collecting in pools, especially in crossings.

Potholes are also not visible on the flooded roads.

According to the municipality roads to be affected include: Acacia Street, Koppie Street at the Merriestream low water bridge, Protea Street at the magasyn and lower Mhluzi lower water bridge, Oranje Street next to Kruger Dam, Cowen Ntuli Street between Verdoorn Street and Boncker Street, Kogel Street, Vos Street, Weber Street and Koets Street towards Eastdene.

The authority also issued the following safety tips:

  • Do not attempt to drive through flooded areas, even if the water looks shallow enough to cross.
  •  If you are driving and approach a flooded area, turn around and go the other way. Many deaths have resulted from attempts to drive through flooded roadways.
  • If your vehicle stalls, leave it immediately and seek higher ground.
  • Exercise caution, especially at night when visibility is poor.
  • Keep away from places that are likely to flood, such as ditches or dry streambeds.
  • Avoid areas where water is flowing rapidly – especially high velocity flow areas.
  • Never attempt to run across flooding water.
  • Do not walk into or near high water.
  • Keep children away from playing in drainage ditches and stormwater drains.
