The Nutcracker: a Christmas Carol of kindness

Middelburg was enchanted as ballerinas, carols, lights, and snowfall brought Drosselmeyer’s Christmas Carol: The Nutcracker to life in support of the Christmas Care Box Project.

The audience was swept into pure festive enchantment on December 5 and 6 as Drosselmeyer’s Christmas Carol: The Nutcracker turned the church stage into a glowing Christmas dreamscape.

From the first musical note to the final bow, the air felt charged with magic.

Andries du Preez returned as the mysterious Drosselmeyer, leading Clara and the full house into a world of swirling ballerinas, shimmering lights, and the timeless music that makes The Nutcracker so unforgettable.

The Maryna Hough School of Ballet delivered breathtaking choreography, with dancers moving like living snowflakes across the stage. Every leap, turn and delicate pointe added a layer of elegance, leaving the audience spellbound.

Beautifully costumed ballerinas and characters filled the stage with colour and grace, while the choir’s Christmas carols wrapped the hall in warmth. Combined with dramatic lighting, sweeping music, and a meticulously crafted set, the performance became a full sensory experience, a story you could feel as much as watch.

From the Garden of Delights to the Kingdom of the Sugar Plum Fairy, the show blended ballet, storytelling, and song in a way that tugged at the heart. It was nostalgic. It was emotional. It was the kind of magic people talk about long after the lights go off.
But the most meaningful magic lived behind the curtain.

The event proudly supported the Christmas Care Box Project, helping bring joy and gifts to local children’s homes, care centres and shelters, ensuring Christmas reaches those who need it most, one little box at a time.
