Blinkpan sewage works muddies Middelburg water
Concerns have been raised in Middelburg over sewage management at the Blinkpan sewage works, with residents questioning potential impacts on the Koornspruit and Klein Olifants River despite municipal assurances that recent water tests are clear.
Ongoing work at the sewage works in Ward 4 has prompted concern among residents regarding the potential impact on Middelburg’s water system and surrounding wetland areas.
Differing views have emerged between residents and the municipality on water quality and sewage management at the site. Heavy machinery, including excavators and TLBs, has been operating at the facility as part of refurbishment and clean-up activities. Approximately R20 million was allocated in the 2025/2026 municipal budget for upgrades at the sewage works. Residents allege that raw sewage is leaking into nearby streams during these operations.

Linked to Middelburg’s water system
Concerns have been raised about whether all required environmental procedures were adequately followed during excavation activities at the sewage plant dam, particularly given the site’s proximity to sensitive water systems. The sewage works are situated within a catchment area linked to the Koornspruit, which flows into the Klein Olifants River, an important water source for the greater Middelburg area, before feeding into the Witbank Dam. Farmers, residents and nearby land users have expressed concern that untreated or partially treated sewage could enter the river system, potentially affecting wetlands, agricultural land and downstream water quality.

Visual evidence and environmental concerns
Photographs and video footage appear to show discoloured water and conditions that residents believe are consistent with sewage contamination in sections of the Koornspruit and adjacent wetland areas. Local farmers and representatives from Black Royal Minerals have also conveyed concerns regarding the possible environmental impact.

Municipality reports clean water tests
Ward 4 councillor Stephan Smith said a meeting was held with residents, representatives from Koornfontein Mine and local municipal officials. During the meeting, it was reported that water samples taken from the area tested “clean”, according to the municipality. A second round of water testing was reportedly conducted, with results again said to be clear.

Residents say issues remain unresolved
Despite these assurances, residents say several issues remain unresolved. These include allegations that septic tanks may be emptied into the Blinkpan dam, as well as concerns about how raw sewage is handled during periods of heavy rainfall. Residents further allege that sewage is being pumped onto neighbouring fields and that runoff from recent heavy rains may have carried sewage into a nearby stream feeding into the Koornspruit. Residents fear that repeated runoff events could pose a risk to downstream water quality, wetlands and agricultural areas.
Mine involvement and safety concerns
Stephan Smith mentioned that Koornfontein Mine officials were informed that they are required to assist with cleaning affected water areas where necessary.
Safety concerns were also raised, with residents reporting that unauthorised access to the site is prohibited without the correct personal protective equipment (PPE). However, residents allege that some workers have been observed and photographed operating in the area without visible PPE.

Department of Water and Sanitation response
Local resident Adri Weyers has submitted a complaint and received official correspondence from the Department of Water and Sanitation in Mpumalanga. According to the correspondence, an investigation was conducted into complaints relating to polluted water associated with the Koornfontein Mine area.
The department reported non-compliance with certain water-use licence conditions and confirmed that enforcement action was initiated to ensure compliance.

Calls for monitoring and transparency
While the municipality maintains that recent water test results indicate no contamination, the community is calling for continued monitoring, improved transparency around sewage management practices and stricter oversight, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall.
One thing remains crystal clear; locals can be sure to find stunning sunsets, fields of ‘waist’lands and rivers of raw sewage in Blinkpan.
