Murder case against Mhluzi learner’s alleged killer postponed

Mhluzi residents expressed their frustrations after the murder case against the alleged killer of a local learner was postponed in court.

Banele Prince Mngidlane, the accused in the killing of LD Moetanalo High School learner Sphamandla Kamogelo Matsepe, made a brief appearance today at the Middelburg Magistrates’ Court.

The courtroom was filled to capacity with members of the Mhluzi community, who gathered anxiously to hear whether Mngidlane would be granted bail.

Kamogelo (18) was brutally killed last Tuesday on school premises. His fellow learner Mngidlane was apprehended later that same day.

Community members attended the hearing in large numbers but left deeply disappointed when the matter was postponed once again.

Kamogelo was laid to rest in a dignified funeral last weekend, with the Matsepe family receiving overwhelming support from the community, friends, and fellow learners. A memorial service celebrating Kamogelo’s life was held on Friday at the Adelaide Tambo Hall in Mhluzi.

• Mngidlane was remanded in custody and will appear in court again next week for a formal bail application.
