We investigate whether the street lights are on

It’s 04:00 in the morning, and it’s dark, from Dennesig to Gholfsig, pitch-black night.

Out on a light hunt.

We’re not afraid!
It’s 04:00 in the morning.
We saddle up.

Ready for an expedition to investigate whether the town’s street lights are on.

Councillor Juanette Mentz said in a WhatsApp post in December how many street lights have been fixed. “Corner of Ferro- and Hoog Street, Dr Beyers Naude Street, Piet Grobler and Helen Joseph Street to Buller Street (November 19 email received), Protea- and Wes Street, Njala Street, Lilian Ngoyi Street.”

Sounds like there’s no street light problem in Middelburg, doesn’t it?
Are residents complaining unnecessarily?
Like they do in Krag Street, Bhimy Damane, Hoog, Totius, Verkenner, and many others.
One Conna reports that ‘Denne Street’s street lights have not been working for more than a year’.
People on Totius Street say it is dark.

We start in Helen Joseph, the lights are on, as Councillor Mentz mentioned.
But, oh no…
Bring the flashlight.
Suddenly, darkness falls just before Verkenner.
At Verkenner, we turn left.
Not a single street light is working.

We carefully get off the bike to take a video.
Later in the morning, we see wires hanging where there should be lights.
Right in Sipres, night!
Protea right, dark.

Let there be light, and then there is light in Walter Sisulu.
Just before the Klein Olifants River bridge, it gets pitch dark again.
Hello darkness, my old friend.

Past the SAVF Old Age Home, there is still no light.
This is the entrance to Middelburg, but visitors are welcomed by unwelcome darkness.

We are driving to investigate the complaints of Gholfsig residents.
Totius Street?

Night Nella, you don’t need to blow out the light, because there is no light.
And if you enquire at the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality, it is like the lights; switched off.

After two hours of investigation, we can now state without a doubt: It’s lights out in Middelburg.
