Woman rescued after attempting to jump from bridge

A young woman is receiving hospital treatment after attempting to jump from a bridge in Lilian Ngoyi Street, but was saved by quick action from passersby, the fire brigade and Community Policing Forum members.

A woman is still receiving hospital treatment for depression after she tried to take her own life by trying to jump from a bridge.

“Things can’t be that bad. If you jump, then I would also have to jump, and then both of us will probably get hurt,” Steve Hart told the young woman to calm her down.

Steve and Marisca Boshoff were walking on Lilian Ngoyi Street last Thursday when they noticed a young woman busy climbing over the railing to prepare to jump from the bridge near the fire brigade.

Steve went up to her and started to talk to her. He let Marisca take over from him and ran to the fire brigade to tell them what was unfolding. On his way there, he also called members of the Community Policing Forum (CPF).

The members of the fire brigade acted swiftly and pulled the young woman to safety.
She was taken to the King Nyabela Hospital, where she is still receiving treatment.

• A member of the CPF (who wants to stay anonymous) said the woman told them that it was not her first suicide attempt.
“She said she wanted to take her own life, because she landed on the streets, lost her children, and started experimenting with drugs.”

• Steve and Marisca would like to thank the members of the fire brigade, as well as the CPF, for their swift response to save the young woman’s life.
