Middelburg traffic officers becoming ‘smart’ with ‘gadgets’

Another 'gadget' added to Middelburg's traffic arsenal.

With the new arsenal of technology, who needs traffic officers, Middelburg residents ask?

The municipality has announced the deployment of a new ‘gadget’ aimed at issuing traffic fines and court notices (Section 56 notices).

Section 56 notices are physically handed to the driver by a traffic officer at the roadside.

The gadget will be phased in soon.

The ‘gadget’ is connected to the NaTIS system and captures accurate information on both the driver and the vehicle.

It can scan both driver’s licences and vehicle registration discs, as well as ID cards.

Deputy Director of Traffic, Frank Mohloana, welcomed the ‘gadget’, saying it will save time.

Another ‘gadget’ will print a receipt with the driver’s details.

The ‘manual’ method will still be used in some instances.
