N11 body ID confirmed as missing Middelburg man

Search for Ahmed Ramadhan, a local businessman, ends in tragedy, after discovering his body this week on N11 near Middelburg.

Ahmed Ramadhan (38), a husband, father of three and well-known local linen salesman, was reported missing after he was last seen in the Nazareth area on June 5.

According to family members, he left shortly after 14:00 in his white Ford Bantam bakkie and was believed to be on his way to collect payment from a customer. His cellphone was reportedly switched off shortly before 15:00 that afternoon, and relatives were unable to contact him.

A search operation involving family members, Community Policing Forum (CPF) members and the SAPS followed in the days after his disappearance.

The search came to a tragic end on Monday when a tip-off led the police and CPF members from Middelburg, Hendrina and Pullenshope to an area along the N11, where Ahmed’s body was discovered.

While official post-mortem results could not been confirmed yet, information indicates that Ahmed may have sustained a fatal gunshot.

Police investigations into the circumstances surrounding his death are continuing.

Family members described Ahmed as a devoted family man who carried the responsibility of supporting not only his own wife and children, but also his brother’s family, after a previous incident left his brother unable to work.

“He always put his family first,” a family representative said.

“He carried his responsibilities with dignity and worked hard to provide for everyone who depended on him.”

Ahmed’s funeral, in accordance with Muslim traditions, was held earlier this week.

His death has also renewed concern among local residents following several recent violent crimes involving businessmen in the Middelburg area.

While some community members have drawn comparisons between Ahmed’s death and other recent cases, the police have not indicated that any of the incidents are connected.

• The Middelburg Observer submitted enquiries to the SAPS regarding the circumstances surrounding Ahmed’s disappearance and death. No official response was received at the time of publication.
