Take it out, take it in, no take it out?

Take your bin out.
No, leave it in.

Video 1: Refuse collectors were busy collecting rubbish in Dennesig early this morning after rumours that municipal refuse workers had received suspension letters sent residents into a tailspin. As a result, most residents kept their green wheelie bins inside, with only a few left out for collection.

That’s how it’s been for the past few days.

Last night, councillors on their wards’ WhatsApp groups recommended that residents not take their green wheelie bins out for removal this morning.

It was even said that refuse removal would be suspended indefinitely.

Late last night, municipal manager Mandla Mnguni sent out a letter in which he said the councillors’ posts were misleading.

This morning, refuse removal began as usual just after seven in Dennesig.

Councillors who sent out messages yesterday afternoon telling residents not to take their green wheelie bins out quickly let it be known that the situation had changed.

The message from councillors

The workers responsible for refuse removal received suspension letters from the Municipal Manager this afternoon. The situation has reached a point where decisive action has to be taken to restore order and ensure that service delivery can continue properly in the future.

As a result, there will be no refuse removal services for an indefinite period. We apologise for the inconvenience and appreciate residents’ patience during this time. These measures are being implemented to ensure sustainable and effective service delivery going forward.

Municipal Manager Mandla Mnguni

The Municipality has noted with great concern the misleading messages that “there will be no refuse collection services for an indefinite period and that solid waste drivers have been suspended”. This information is misleading and incorrect.

Our refuse collection teams are still working hard to deliver services despite the shortage of resources. The Municipality wants to assure residents that refuse collection continues as scheduled in all areas; however, there will be areas that may be temporarily affected. A communication will be released in due course in this regard.

Furthermore, the Municipality has come up with interventions which will be implemented from tomorrow, Wednesday, to normalise the current situation.

Individuals who are peddling misleading information are pushing their own agenda, and the Municipality distances itself from such conduct. The Municipality condemns such behaviour.
