Contractor disappears after digging giant hole in road

The new road is almost impassable.

A contractor who did work for the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality dug a giant hole in a new road and then disappeared.

The new access road between the Industrial area and the Bethal road has been a single lane for weeks now.

A large pile of dirt and a broken plastic water pipe remain at the site.

According to councillor Deon van der Merwe, the municipality said they will not clean it up because it’s the contractor’s work, but the contractor is no longer on site.

Enquiries have been made to the municipality’s communications department to determine who the contractor is and whether he was paid for the unfinished work.

• The municipality’s response is awaited.
