Two Middelburg security guards found dead in shipping container

Both victims had relocated to South Africa from Eswatini in search of a better life.

Two Eswatini men, Nkosinathi Dlamini (31) and Siphosakhe Njekwane Mavuso (21), died after being poisoned by carbon monoxide while using a makeshift brazier (mbaula) inside a closed shipping container.

The tragedy unfolded on June 28 after the men were burning wood inside the container to keep warm, while working as security guards near the Middelburg Mall.

Both men were found dead near the doorway, indicating they tried to escape before collapsing.

Bongiwe Sphiwe Dlamini, Nkosinathi’s younger sister, said, “I stay in Eswatini, so I don’t really have any idea what happened. From the information I received, they were at work.”

Nkosinathi was laid to rest on July 5 and leaves behind his mother, siblings and two children, aged three and four.

Efforts to reach Siphosakhe’s family were unsuccessful at the time of publication.
