A woman believed to be between 40 and 50 years old died after being struck by a vehicle while crossing the R33 between Groblersdal and Stoffberg yesterday, October 21.
The accident occurred at about 07:35, approximately 10km outside Groblersdal, when a Toyota Starlet Cross struck the woman, according to police. Observer has meanwhile learnt that the deceased had not been struck by the Starlet Cross, and that the Toyota actually belonged to the victim.
The victim was not in her vehicle when the incident occurred.
Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety spokesperson Mashudu Mabata confirmed that no other fatalities were reported. The woman had not been identified by the time of publication.
She was declared dead on the scene.
Emergency services attend scene
Emergency Medical Services personnel and members of the Groblersdal police attended the scene. Police had not confirmed the case opened in connection with the incident by the time of publication.
The incident remains under police investigation.
Investigators declined to speculate on the cause of the tragedy.
The accident led to the temporary closure of the road, with motorists travelling from Groblersdal redirected to the N11, while those coming from Stoffberg were advised to use the Loskop road. The road was reopened to traffic at about 13:30.
Mabata urged motorists to remain vigilant, particularly in areas with high pedestrian activity. She also urged pedestrians to use designated crossing points and stay alert for approaching vehicles.
“The department appreciates motorists for their patience and co-operation during the temporary road closure,” said Mabata.
“It also commends all stakeholders who responded to the scene for their efforts.”
Transport Month safety operations
The fatal crash occurred during October Transport Month, as law enforcement operations continue across Limpopo.
The department said it would maintain heightened visibility and a zero-tolerance approach to road lawlessness, urging all road users to act responsibly and arrive alive.
