1 dead, 9 injured in R574 crash near Motetema

Speeding and unsafe overtaking are suspected factors in a collision between a taxi and sedan near Viva Garage.

One person died, and nine others were injured in a collision involving a Toyota Corolla sedan and a Toyota Quantum minibus taxi on the R574 near Motetema Township on Wednesday afternoon.

The crash occurred at about 15:40 near the Viva Garage, according to Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety spokesperson Mashudu Mabata.

Mabata said the vehicles were involved in a side-impact collision. The preliminary possible causes were unsafe overtaking and speeding.

Emergency Medical Services personnel certified the driver of the sedan dead on the scene.

The taxi driver and four passengers sustained moderate injuries, while four other passengers suffered minor injuries. The injured were transported to Toitskraal for further medical treatment.

The identity of the deceased had not been released at the time of publication.

Mayor urges road safety

Sekhukhune District Municipality Mayor Minah Bahula urged motorists and pedestrians to exercise caution on the roads, particularly amid the rainy weather expected to continue during the week.

“Please drive responsibly, reduce speed, maintain a safe following distance and remain vigilant on the roads,” Bahula said.

The Observer sent questions to Limpopo police spokesperson Sergeant Maphure Manamela regarding the case opened following the crash. No response had been received at the time of publication.
