Firearms seized, suspects nabbed

Police discovered two unlicensed firearms and arrested suspects in separate incidents within parts of the Sekhukhune District on Friday.

Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, Limpopo Provincial Police spokesperson, said a 57-year-old shop owner within the Hlogotlou policing precinct was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm following a tip-off.

Ledwaba said the police discovered the firearm at the foreign national’s girlfriend’s residence in Hlalanikahle Village.

The police recovered unlicensed firearms during both incidents.

The police in Burgersfort apprehended two suspects at Ga-Manyaka Village in connection with the possession of suspected stolen property, robbery and the possession of an unlicensed firearm.

Ledwaba said the suspects were arrested after the police received information about an awaiting trial escapee on the run since March.

He informed that the escapee, previously arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and robbery, was nabbed at his rented residence while with his girlfriend.

Ledwaba stated that the police discovered an unlicensed firearm as well as a stolen cellphone during the arrest.

“The cellphone was linked to an armed robbery which occurred in June. Both suspects were apprehended. His accomplice was arrested for possession of stolen property, while he was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and escaping from lawful custody.”

• The arrested suspect in the Hlogotlou policing area is expected to appear before the Nebo Magistrate’s Court, while the two nabbed in the Burgersfort area are scheduled to appear at the Praktiseer Magistrate’s Court today.
