Premier mourns 12 crash victims

The Limpopo Premier expressed shock following a crash on the R81 where 12 people lost their lives.

Limpopo Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba has expressed shock following a fatal accident that occurred on the R81 road along Ga-Sekgopo Village in the Capricorn District on Sunday afternoon.

According to the Provincial Department of Transport and Community Safety, the serious collision involved a minibus taxi and two trucks.

The relevant authorities are still investigating the cause of the accident. In a media release, the department stated that preliminary investigations indicate that 12 people lost their lives in the devastating incident.

“The news of this tragic accident is deeply touching, particularly when we consider the mothers and families affected by this loss. The provincial government stands in solidarity with the families during this difficult time, and we are committed to providing them with the necessary support,” the premier said.

A meeting was scheduled between Ramathuba and the grieving families on Monday afternoon at the Pietersburg Hospital Recreation Hall to assist with the painful identification process of the deceased.

Transport and Community Safety MEC Violet Mathye and Health MEC Dieketseng Mashego were also expected to join the premier.

The department committed to providing regular updates regarding the accident.

Ramathuba urged all road users to exercise caution and adhere to safety regulations, “This tragic event serves as a reminder of the need for greater awareness on our roads.”
