Local residents engage with leaders

Motetema residents engaged SDM leaders on audit outcomes, revenue gains and service delivery priorities.

Residents had an opportunity to speak directly with municipal leaders during a Municipal Public Accounts Committee meeting hosted by Sekhukhune District Municipality (SDM) in Motetema Township last Monday.

The township falls under Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality.

Municipal expenditure and audit outcomes dominated discussions, with the meeting centred on the 2024/2025 Draft Annual Report. The session brought together councillors, municipal officials and community members to assess financial performance and service delivery across the district and local municipality.

Municipal Manager Meshack Kgwale and MMC for Economic Development and Planning Alfred Matlala outlined measures to address performance gaps. These include plans to roll out community education on the newly introduced smart water metering system aimed at improving billing accuracy and transparency.

SDM spokesperson Lemson Moropjane said there had been notable progress in revenue collection, particularly through improved payments by businesses and government institutions.

He added that the gains are expected to strengthen the municipality’s financial position.

Speaking on behalf of Executive Mayor Minah Bahula, Matlala commended Chief Finance Officer Hendrick Nkadimeng for strengthening revenue collection streams.

“These efforts will bolster the municipality’s financial sustainability and enable us to reinvest in critical infrastructure and service delivery projects,” he said.

Moropjane said the meeting also created a platform for residents to raise concerns and provide input, which will inform the Oversight Report to be tabled before council, reinforcing participatory governance.
