Two arrested after mob killing
The man succumbed to his injuries while being transported to the hospital.
Two men, aged 26 and 32, have been arrested following an alleged mob justice killing of a man at Hlogotlou Unit B last Friday.
According to Limpopo police, officers responded to the incident and found the victim lying on the ground with multiple injuries.
Limpopo Provincial Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said the severely injured man was rushed to a nearby hospital for medical treatment, but was declared dead on arrival.
The man was allegedly accused of housebreaking and theft and was reportedly found in possession of stolen groceries.
Members of the community allegedly assaulted the man. No personal information about the victim has been released yet.
Following an intensive investigation, members of the Sekhukhune Tracking Team, Sekhukhune Highway Patrol, and Hlogotlou detectives arrested two suspects during the early hours of Friday morning.
The suspects were expected to appear in the Nebo Magistrate’s Court today (May 18) for murder.
Limpopo Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe condemned the incident and warned residents against taking the law into their own hands.
“Mob justice is criminal and cannot be tolerated. Community members are urged to report suspected criminal activities to the police and allow the law to take its course,” said Hadebe.
She added that vigilantism undermines the criminal justice system and often results in unnecessary loss of life.
