Middelburg plays host to PGA Sunshine Senior Tour

Keith Horne was the winner of the PGA Sunshine Senior Tour which was held at the Middelburg Country Club.

The Middelburg Country Club played host to the PGA Senior Sunshine Tour over the weekend, where golfing legends from around the world were welcomed to the pristine greens manicured by our very own Johan Otto.

The tournament, which consisted of a professional and pro-am tournament, not only brought these legends to Middelburg but also allowed avid local golfers to play alongside their heroes.

Round 1 kicked off on Friday with the professionals contending for the Senior Sunshine Tournament’s coveted trophy, followed by the tee-off for the pro-am at 10:00.
Round 2 continued over Saturday for both pro-am and professional, with round 3 concluding the Senior Sunshine Tour.

According to tournament director Pat Lowth, the tournament was a collaboration between the PGA and Sunshine Senior Tour, which saw players from as far as Sweden, Angola, Mozambique and Swaziland coming to Middelburg.

The winner of the Sunshine Senior Tour qualifies for an automatic entry into the Staysure PGA Seniors Championship in Europe, which will be played at Trump International Golf Links in Aberdeen, Scotland, where the total prize fund is confirmed at €1m (R21.5m).

“Pieter Pretorius was the organiser of the PGA Sunshine Senior Tour and is to thank for the tournament being held in Middelburg. We’d like to thank Pieter and the sponsors, as well as the greenkeeper, Johan Otto, and his team for getting the course into a playable condition,” Lowth said.

Pro-am team: Michael du Toit, Anel Moolman, Christine Strydom and Marietjie Lovett.

While Friday and Saturday brought wet conditions to the course, round 3 was enjoyed thanks to perfect conditions, where a battle at the front was witnessed on the last three holes as lead players swapped scores in their advance to the win.

The results are as follows:
