Celebrating class of 2014
The annual Mayoral Education Awards Gala Dinner finally took place last week following an impromptu cancellation due to violent protests at the Banquet hall on Friday, 16 January.
The purpose of this annual event is to celebrate top achievers in matric and recognize their achievements and commitment in their studies.
Steve Tshwete Local Municipality took first place in the Nkangala district and third place in the province at 85.6%.
The top learners in Steve Tshwete for the class of 2014 are:
1. Latif Zhraa Mohomed from Steelcrest High School – 93%
2. Monique Combrink from HTS Middelburg – 91.7 %
3. Dehan Opperman from HTS Middelburg – 91.14%
4. Meike Van Staden from HTS Middelburg – 90.5%
5. Coendraad Mouton from HTS Middelburg – 89.6%
6. Nicole Jansen van Vuuren from Middelburg High School – 89.6%
7. Usaamah Gardee from Middelburg Muslim School – 88.7%
8. Anelia Swanepoel form HTS Middelburg – 88.7%
9. Prisca Mogase Maloa form Sozama Secondary School – 87.8%
10. Benjamin De Wet from HTS Middelburg – 87.2%
Although pupils had already left for Varsity, the Executive Mayor, Cllr Mike Masina, also handed over awards to Most Improved Circuit, Best Circuit, Most Improved School and Top Ten performing schools.
The best performing schools were Mphanama Secondary School in Mhluzi, Middelburg Muslim School and Bankfontein Combined School.
These schools obtained a 100% pass rate, Bankfontein Combined School took the lime light this year by getting a 100% from the 30% pass rate of last year.
According to Cllr Masina the municipality has been working with the Paul Mthimunye bursary fund over the years in advancing education targets and ensuring that many leaving Grade 12 can access tertiary education.
Thirty learners have been funded by the private sector, four have completed their studies while 13 are still in institutions of higher learning.
“I am thankful for the educational progress in the region,” Cllr Masina concluded.
