Metro police recover stolen cables worth R500k

JOBURG – The MMC for Public Safety has said cable theft contributed to thousands of people going without electricity for days.

Copper cables worth R500 000, believed to have been stolen from City Power’s Randburg Station on Wednesday, have been recovered by the Johannesburg Metro police K9 Unit.

Acting on information received from the Crime Intelligence Unit (CIU), the Metro police were able to trace and recover the stolen copper cables hidden in a warehouse in Pretoria.

“Two suspects were arrested by JMPD [Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department] officers and are detained at the Silverton Police Station for further prosecution. The suspects will face serious criminal charges of possession of stolen goods,” MMC for public safety, Michael Sun, said.

Sun applauded both the JMPD K9 Unit and the CIU for their swift action.

“The swift arrest of the suspects and recovery of the stolen copper cables is a clear message to the criminal syndicates sabotaging our City that their ill gains will come at a hefty price.”

Sun said that cable theft contributed to thousands of people going without electricity for days and that millions of rands were spent by the City to reconnect the cables.

“We will ensure that these criminals are removed from our society and spend many years in prison where they belong.”

The Metro police were looking for other suspects believed to be linked to the crime and urged anyone with information to contact the police.
