Rising theft out of motor vehicle incidents reported near New Road in Midrand

A spike in vehicle break-ins near New Road in Midridge Park has residents on edge, with motorists urged to stay vigilant around the Engen Big Bird area.

Residents parking along New Road in Midridge Park, particularly around the Engen Big Bird area, have been urged to exercise extra caution, following a reported increase in theft-related incidents.

The warning comes after a concerned resident reported a vehicle break-in to Ward 132 councillor Annette Deppe, highlighting what they described as a growing criminal trend in the area.

The resident, who requested anonymity, said their car was broken into while they briefly stopped at the Engen Big Bird on the morning of January 21, with a work-issued laptop being stolen.

According to the resident, on-site security personnel confirmed that similar thefts occur frequently in the area. They further indicated that there are no officers actively patrolling the parking area, only those assigned to individual stores, leaving vehicles vulnerable to criminal activity.

Concerned about the frequency of such incidents, the resident said they felt compelled to alert the councillor, to prevent further losses and improve public safety.

“Given the number of incidents, I felt it was important to raise this matter for awareness and possible intervention to prevent further losses.”

A case has since been opened at Midrand Police Station, as the resident hopes to recover the stolen items and assist police with their investigation.

Deppe has also urged residents and motorists to remain extra vigilant when visiting the area, advising them not to leave valuables inside their vehicles, even for short periods.

Community members are also encouraged to report suspicious activity and theft incidents to the police and local authorities to help strengthen crime-prevention efforts in the area.
