Wanga FC starts 2026 on a high with gritty win

A single moment of composure proved the difference as Wanga FC opened their 2026 Midrand Promotional League campaign with a gritty 1–0 victory over Super Gauteng FC at Rabie Ridge Stadium.

Wanga FC could not have scripted a better start to the new year, kicking off their Midrand Promotional League campaign with a hard-fought 1–0 victory over a determined but struggling Super Gauteng FC at Rabie Ridge Stadium on January 24.

After a disappointing 2–0 defeat against Kaalfontein DF late last year, Wanga entered the league opener with a renewed sense of purpose. They showcased remarkable composure and resilience, even in the face of tough conditions.

A poorly marked and uneven pitch tested both sides, yet it was Wanga who emerged with all three points. The decisive moment came midway through the second half when Super Gauteng’s Ratsomani Sathege brought down Wanga’s Mahapa Maila inside the box.

The referee pointed straight to the penalty spot, and Karabo Masombuka made no mistake, calmly sending the goalkeeper the wrong way to seal the win.

The result lifts Wanga FC to nine points from four matches, placing them in a strong position ahead of a mouth-watering clash against Chloorkop Super Eagles on January 25.

Despite the loss, Super Gauteng showed early intent and controlled large spells of possession in the first half. Nkululeko Ntshegang fired the first shot on target with a powerful long-range effort, which was expertly palmed away by Wanga goalkeeper Sihle Phakathi, who went on to deliver an impressive performance between the posts.

Wanga posed a constant threat on the counterattack, with Masombuka’s pace troubling the Super Gauteng defence. He came close to opening the scoring in the first half, striking the upright. Nkululeko Masango also rattled the crossbar, while Super Gauteng’s Leon Nchanchibi saw several promising efforts either saved or ruled offside.

As the game wore on, fatigue crept in, with much of the second half played in midfield battles. Super Gauteng pushed for an equaliser after conceding, but their shots failed to seriously test Phakathi, who stood firm to secure the clean sheet.

The January 24 fixtures marked a busy opening weekend for the Midrand Promotional League, with matches including Real Super Stars vs Spartans, Kaalfontein DF vs Pothos, Hawks vs Kwaito FC, Midrand Titans Academy vs T Wolves, and Midrand United vs Chloorkop Super Eagles.

The league table is expected to shift significantly following the January 25 fixtures, as Spartans face Hawks, Chloorkop Super Eagles take on Wanga FC, Super Gauteng battles T Wolves, Real Super Stars meet Midrand United, and Kwaito FC clashes with Kaalfontein DF.
