The IIE’s Varsity College Waterfall final year students get insights into the workforce

The final year afternoon insights included focusing on transferable skills, building a portfolio, leveraging LinkedIn, networking beyond screens, and personal branding, all skills needed to thrive in todays working world.

More than 60 final-year students from The IIE’s Varsity College Waterfall attended a recent final year afternoon event hosted on campus.

The event aimed to provide these students with valuable insights from industry experts and alumni. Insights included focusing on transferable skills, building a portfolio, leveraging LinkedIn, networking beyond screens, and personal branding, all essential for transitioning from student life to the workforce.

Ntokozo Cele, an alumna of the Waterfall campus and The IIE Varsity College alumni relations intern, encouraged the students, saying: “Always reach out, always ask for help, and do not be shy. You will never know until you try.”

She inspired the crowd by sharing her own career success story and offered practical steps to help them confidently launch their professional journeys.

Amanda Msomi, talent acquisition and employee value proposition lead at L’Oreal, shared strategies for students to develop skills and stand out in the job market.

“I think it was an absolutely lovely event. It is good to get initiatives such as these right. The engagement was meaningful, and it was also just good to have the students understand what the world is like outside tertiary,” said Msomi. “Students should keep hope. The work environment is quite congested, and some students might find jobs quicker than the rest. It is very important for students to network with industry experts and to take advantage of those who come to campus to have these kinds of conversations.”
