City’s service delivery sees Halfway House rejuvenated

Director of Region A Thaba Makgafe said that the service delivery operation is a mayoral programme that seeks to tackle various service delivery challenges at once, but community members say it's of no good if they're cleaned up and then forgotten.

The city’s high-impact service delivery operations have been hugely welcomed after they hit the streets in a bid to revive the Halfway House suburb of Midrand.

City entities, including Pikitup, Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA), and others, did the various jobs they specialise in. JRA officials were busy patching potholes and re-marking the road signs along Church Road, while Pikitup was tackling illegal dumping across the CBD. All this happened on June 4.

It was also accompanied by an education and awareness campaign at the Boulders Shopping Centre, seeking to educate residents about the roles and responsibilities of the various city entities.

Glenda Franco, the Health and Emporium Centre manager in Halfway House, said they were privileged to host a public participation event to ensure service delivery. “The day was a great success, however, it was mentioned by the public that it was of no good doing the clean-up and then forgetting about it. To maintain the good relationship with the city, it needs to become an ongoing and regular responsibility, in order to be of any benefit to Inner Grand Central, Halfway House home-owners and businesses.”

The operations came a week after Loyiso Masuku, MMC for Group Corporate and Shared Services, led an oversight walkabout to monitor service delivery progress in the area.

Region A director Thaba Makgafe said the high impact service delivery operation is a mayoral programme, which seeks to bring multiple departments to tackle various service delivery challenges. “Their efforts include tackling illegal dumping, repairing potholes, fixing traffic lights, unblocking storm water drains, education and awareness campaigns, and building inspections, among others.”
