Back-to-Back dreams alive for last year’s African Pride Games champs

Ayifuniwena FC and Young Pirates FC look unstoppable as they chase repeat victories at the African Pride Games.

The competition for township football supremacy is intensifying as the African Pride Games progress to the quarterfinals.

With only eight teams remaining in each division, the defending champions in both the U23 and senior divisions are putting in the effort to eliminate their opponents and retain their titles.

Reigning senior champions 012 Ayifuniwena FC are determined to defend their title, hoping to bring the prestigious trophy back to Pretoria for the second consecutive year. The Tshwane Kasi football giants have impressed throughout the competition and are considered one of the favourites heading into the quarterfinals.

They are joined by fellow Tshwane team Rinkase Best 11, which has also advanced to the final eight and demonstrated itself as one of the most consistent township clubs in the tournament.

In the U23 division, last year’s champions, Young Pirates FC, are equally focused on defending their title. The young team made a bold statement by achieving a resounding 5–1 victory over SGivo United, securing their place in the quarterfinals and cementing their reputation as a formidable competitor.

This year marks the sixth edition of the African Pride Games since they began in 2020, hosted once again at Rabie Ridge Stadium. The tournament has become a highlight on the township sports calendar, showcasing local football excellence and community spirit.

The U23 quarterfinals will kick off on October 25, starting with Manthwaleng Shakers facing Mzimba Shaker, followed by Young Pirates clashing with Skepe Nketole. The next day will feature 21st Century FC going up against Covid-19 FC, and Mudagasi battling Money Heist for a chance at the semifinals.

The Senior Men’s division is set for equally intense matchups. On October 25, Gwara Gwara will play against Bakone Ba FC before Ayifuniwena FC takes on Gunners in a highly anticipated showdown. Further action includes The Rock FC facing Covid-19 FC, and Mbhidzo meeting Rinkase Best 11.

Phuti Lekoloane, tournament founder and chairperson of the Phuti Lekoloane Foundation, expressed his satisfaction with the level of football displayed this year. “We’ve witnessed incredible football throughout the tournament, with the defending champions Ayifuniwena FC and Young Pirates FC showing no signs of letting go of their titles,” said Lekoloane.

“Ayifuniwena FC proved their dominance by eliminating both Isithembiso FC and ADT FC… But the biggest shock of the tournament came when Covid-19 FC stunned fans by eliminating Skepe Nketole FC in a thrilling encounter this past weekend.”

The football action will conclude on November 2, but the excitement does not stop there. Lekoloane confirmed that the netball and women’s football finals will also take place on the same day, along with an exciting new addition, basketball, featuring both male and female divisions.
