Volkswagen drops hints of incoming new Taigo

South Africa will only be privy to the 85kW/200Nm 1.0 TSI engine and seven-speed DSG.


Volkswagen South Africa has provided a series of specification details of the all-new Taigo ahead of its market debut next year.

Unveiled back in July as the Europeanised version of the Nivus sold in South America since last year, the Taigo, which will be build at Wolfsburg’s Pamplona’s Plant in Spain, will arrive in the three quarter of 2022 powered by a single engine and with a solitary transmission option.

Based on the same A0 platform as the Polo, the Taigo measures 4 258 mm in overall length with its wheelbase coming to 2 566 mm, height to 1 495 mm and width to 1 755 mm. Claimed boot space is 438-litres or 1 222-litres with the 60/40 split rear seat folded down.

Like its Old Continent sibling, and indeed the T-Roc, the Taigo will have a choice of two trim levels; Style and R-Line, both powered by the familiar 1.0 TSI that produces 85kW/200Nm. A seven-speed DSG is entrusted with sending the amount of grunt to the front wheels.

On the equipment side, the Taigo will come as standard with LED headlights, the 6.5-inch Composition Media infotainment system, multi-function steering wheel and the 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster.

Optional are the Matrix IQ LED headlights, a wireless smartphone charger, the eight-inch Discover Media infotainment system and a six-speaker, 300-watt Beats sound system.

In total, a choice of eight colours will available ; Pure White, Ascot Grey, Deep Black Pearl, Reflex Silver Metallic, Smokey Grey Metallic, Kings Red Metallic, Reef Blue Metallic and Visual Green Metallic. A two-tone option, which adds a black a roof, can be had on all bar Deep Black Pearl.

While still to be confirmed pricing for the Taigo is expected to start from around R350 000.
