Fresh and exciting MG3 coming to SA

South African fans of British connoisseur brand MG have something to look forward to at the upcoming Johannesburg International Motor Show (JIMS) in October – a sneak preview of the new MG3 only to be launched in its home country next month.

This new supermini will appeal to the younger generation with its sporty 78 kW engine and chassis dynamics, as well as generous spec, practicality and advanced safety. The new MG3, which is expected in South Africa before the end of the year, proves the saying “dynamite comes in small packages”.

In the event of the MG3, however, it is more a case of TNT – the new supermini boasts unique design features such as its signature front LED daytime running lights and a wrap-around front windscreen. Hidden from the sporty exterior styling is a spacious interior, one of the largest in the supermini class.

Multiple airbags and a host of mechanical and electronic safety features offer some of the latest safety technology as standard equipment. The key attraction for many people will not only be the attractive looks of the new MG3, but also the massive fun factor offered by this new five-door hatch with its spacious interior.

South African MG chief operating officer Craig Lanham-Love said the new MG3 offered buyers something really new. The MG was a “stylish, highly practical car” that is huge fun to drive and fun to own.

Still to be launched to the UK market four models will be available with a full range of options and accessories. Specifications and options for the South African market will be announced at the Johannesburg International Motor Show with pricing expected to be announced closer to launch in the last quarter of the year.

The four models are the flagship MG3 3STYLE, the mid-range MG3 3FORM and MG3 3FORM SPORT as well as the entry model MG3 3TIME. Details of the local line-up for the South African market will be announced closer to launch.

All models are powered by a sporty DOHC VTi-TECH petrol engine with a five-speed manual gearbox and have the same MG chassis designed to make driving the MG3 a bit more fun than any average car in this segment. The 1,5 litre engine delivers 78 kW at 6 000 rpm and 137 Nm of torque at 4 750 rpm, making it an easily driveable car.

Acceleration from 0-100 km/h is expected to be around 10 seconds, while reaching a top speed in excess of 175 km/h.

MG South Africa general manager Derrick Bishop describes the MG3 as a modern MG that allows a new generation of people to have fun with their MG. Backing this up each dealer will have an interactive computer station where a customers can sit down and design and customise their vehicle.

The customer will have about 10 MG approved graphic packs to choose from. There will be a separate wing mirror options to choose from as well as tyre options.

The graphic pack options will be available on each of the standard MG3 colours offered by MG South Africa. Bishop added the new MG3 boasts one of the largest interiors in the supermini class.

The new range of models to be launched in South Africa will be on show at the JIMS from October 18 to 27.
