Parents and learners urged to return textbooks

The lifespan of a specific textbook is a minimum of three years, as such their retrieval is imperative because it is not possible that the department can procure textbooks every year.

MBOMBELA- The Mpumalanga Department of Education requests all parents and guardians to ensure that learners return school textbooks before the closing of schools tomorrow or alternatively before schools re-opens on January 13.

“A textbook serves as one of the fundamental resources for the enhancement of effective teaching and learning and it is for that reason that every effort must be made to ensure the return of all textbooks in good condition to schools to be used for the advancement of the delivery of quality education in the following school year,” explained Jasper Zwane spokesperson for the department.

He added that textbooks form the core of the LTSM component especially for the large majority of learners and remain the major source of information for the enhancement of teaching and learning.

The lifespan of a specific textbook is a minimum of three years as such their retrieval is imperative because it is not possible that the department can procure textbooks every year.

“Schools are obliged to ensure that the supplied textbooks are used effectively for the prescribed duration (a minimum period of three years) and to ensure 100% retrieval of textbooks issued out to learners,” adds Zwane.

Textbooks remain the property of the Department of Education and it is therefore vital that they be preserved for future generations during the stipulated life span.
