 UMP hosts StartUpAfrica Innovation Olympiads

The University of Mpumalanga hosts SIO South Africa to identify, develop and support future African leaders.

The University of Mpumalanga (UMP) hosted the StartUpAfrica Innovation Olympiads (SIO) South Africa, on Friday, May 15, aiming to identify, develop and support future African leaders through innovation, mentorship and entrepreneurship platforms, driving solutions to real societal and economic challenges.

The event brought together young innovators, student entrepreneurs, industry leaders and partners from across the continent. It created an inspiring environment for collaboration, creativity and knowledge sharing, while showcasing the innovative potential of Africa’s youth.

The SIOs are designed to identify, nurture and empower the next generation of African entrepreneurs. Through these initiatives, participants are encouraged to develop sustainable solutions that address challenges facing communities across the continent. The programme seeks to equip young people with practical skills, leadership capabilities and business networks that can help transform innovative ideas into impactful enterprises.

UMP vice chancellor Prof Thenjiwe Meyiwa emphasised the significance of partnerships in advancing innovation and entrepreneurship in Africa.
