Mabuye Traditional Council celebrates uMmemo ceremony in Clau-Clau

Inkosi Mbuyane pledges to reward top-performing schools, teachers and learners to place education at the centre of development.

Traditional leaders, youth and community members gathered in Clau-Clau on August 15 to celebrate local culture and drive development initiatives.
The event provided a platform to promote cultural pride while sharing important information on education, health, electricity, rural safety, policing programmes and opportunities available to young people.

Pledge to reward academic excellence

Speaking at the ceremony, Inkosi Mbuyane encouraged the community to continue preserving and promoting its culture while placing education at the centre of its development efforts. He also pledged to reward the best-performing school, learner and teacher, encouraging both educators and learners to strive for excellence.

Call to protect women and learners

The chairperson of the Mpumalanga House of Traditional and Khoisan Leaders, Kgoshi Mathupa Mokoena, said the ceremony was aimed at educating community members on responsible conduct and encouraging them to showcase and take pride in their identity and achievements.

Mokoena highlighted pressing social issues, including crime and gender-based violence, urging men to stop using women as punching bags and calling for greater respect and protection of women in communities.

He further appealed to protest leaders not to involve children in protests or remove them from classes during demonstrations, emphasising the importance of protecting learners’ right to education.
