The Langeloop underdogs, Black Burn United have defied all odds by reaching the finals of the hotly contested Selati Super Cup and are now on the verge of writing their own history.
Black Burn, who booked a place in the finals of this competition at the expense of Schoemansdal Junior Aces, will play their first-ever cup final when they take on Mdladla Peacemakers this Sunday at the Driekoppies Stadium.
“This is a dream come true for us, a bonus, because to be honest, we never thought that we would get this far.
“As you all know, this is probably the country’s most highly contested soccer competition ever, and to reach the finals is certainly a huge bonus,” said Black Burn coach, Richard ‘Bhono’ Masilela.
Masilela is referred to by the locals as “Jomo Sono”, because just like Sono, he is the owner and coach of the team.
“It’s true, they call me Jomo because I do everything by myself, I even drive the team to the games,” laughs Masilela.
A professionally trained military officer, he is aware of what his troops are facing in the finals but is adamant that they may turn the tables on Mdladla Peacemakers.
“We are playing against an experienced side with quality players, but we also have our own players who are equally up to the challenge,” said Masilela.
He said he would accept the result on the day and would not blame his boys if they failed to lift the sweet Selati Cup.
“They have actually made me very proud by reaching the finals, and even though I would love to lift this cup, I wouldn’t be angry at my boys if we fail,” went on Masilela.
After smooth sailing to the finals, the Mdladla Peacemakers have also promised to take the trophy home.
“We didn’t get this far to be just second best, we are taking this trophy to KaMdladla and we are doing it for the entire community.
“We respect our opponents, they have proven that they can play good football, but come Sunday, we will show them no mercy,” said Peacemakers’ spokesperson, Thabo Manyovu Mnisi.
Manyovu said their team represented the entire Mdladla community and he believed that a victory would help uplift this community.
