Female referee can handle a man’s world

Local referee to officiate varsity tournaments in September.

Not even the sky is the limit for a local 25-year-old female referee.

Euzen Mokoena was born and bred in Wales Village, Bushbuckridge. She attended Matlushe Primary School from where she went to Alfred Matshine High School. She then joined the Tshwane University of Technology (Mbombela campus) where she acquired her national diploma in accounting.

Mokoena started taking part in sports at a very young age. She was a netball captain throughout her primary, secondary and tertiary years, respectively. She has competed in Stellenbosch for athletics and in Pretoria for netball.

In 2013 Reginah “Fish” Mokoena registered her for Flamingo FC that campaigns in the Sasol Women’s League. She then started to attend refereeing workshops at KaBokweni Stadium, where she received her elementary referee’s course certificate. That is where she fell in love with refereeing. She now holds a level 3 certificate.

Godfrey Mugabi, Given Muavha and Tshepo Mbatha all groomed Uezen. She officiated women’s soccer and gogos’ games in her neighbourhood. They then promoted her to officiate men’s games in the Casteel Country League. She became the referee for the 2014/15 season. She is currently refereeing both SAB and ABC Motsepe league games.

Last year she was invited to her first national football referee workshop in Johannesburg where she did her first fitness test and passed with flying colours. She was honoured to officiate the National Women’s u/19 finals which were also televised on SABC. She will officiating varsity tournament in September.
She recently attended the National Preseason Workshop in Pretoria where she again passed her fitness test.
Euzen enjoys watching TV, listening to music and socialising with friends when she is not in the soccer field
