DJ Shabba scoops another award

He attributes his success to community radio, his team including his producer, listeners of the show and not taking criticism to heart.

Ligwalagwala FM’s Afternoon Drive Show host, Dumisani Mavuso, popularly known as DJ Shabba, has done it again.

DJ Shabba scooped the best afternoon drive presenter award during the Liberty Radio Awards at a glittering ceremony held in Sandton, Johannesburg last Saturday. Speaking to the humble DJ this week, he could not contain his excitement. “This award serves as a milestone in my life and honestly, I was not expecting to win.”

He admitted that it has not been an easy road with all the criticism and competitors in the industry. “Radio is big and looking back from where I started, things have changed tremendously. One thing I’ve taken with me in my vast experience is that talent needs to be nurtured and to be the best, you need to listen to the best. So, that has enabled me to reconsider the way I do things,” he said.

This is not Shabba’s first victory as he has two national awards under his belt, three provincially and he was recently crowned as the King of Radio at the 2016 Mpumalanga Sunshine Media Awards. He revealed that he has also been working behind the scenes as a contributor to the station.

“This is confirmation that there are other opportunities within the industry and it helps to understand and interact with your audience. Things have transformed, especially with social media being an influence and a part of everything we do.”

Shabba said, “If we could all learn to believe and accept that we are not perfect, things would be easier. We need to learn to separate negativity from positivity. Through criticism, I have achieved a lot and my story is written.”

Asked if he has any words of encouragement to aspirant radio hosts, he simply replied, “Be informed, know there is competition, be spontaneous and remember, patience is key.”
