VIDEO: ‘Nothing effective is happening’ – DA leaders visit Usindiso building in Joburg

The building has not been repaired since the fire in August 2023.


DA Johannesburg caucus leader Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku and DA Gauteng shadow MEC for Human Settlements Mervyn Cirota conducted an oversight visit at the Usindiso building in Johannesburg on Monday.

On 31 August 2023, a fire broke out at the Usindiso building, claimed the lives of 76 residents.

The building has not been repaired since the tragedy.

“We have come with this delegation because we are extremely concerned as to the deterioration of this part of the City of Johannesburg,” said Cirota.

“People are nowhere to be seen, nothing effective is happening, so we have come here to see what’s going on… We are going to raise these issues, we are going to find out what’s going on, we are going to name and shame.”
