Gauteng Health calls for public to serve on mental health review boards

In a bid to strengthen and enhance mental healthcare services, the Gauteng Department of Health has called for suitably qualified members of the public to serve on various mental health boards for a period of three years.

The appointment of mental health review boards is in line with the Mental Health Care act no 17 of 2002. The Department has mental healthcare review boards in the province’s five regions that play a critical role in maintaining and enhancing the standard of care for mental health patients.

The mental healthcare review board members perform various functions which include amongst others:

  • Consider appeals against decisions of the head of a health establishment.
  • Make decisions with regard to assisted or involuntary mental health care, treatment, and rehabilitation services.
  • Consider reviews and make decisions on assisted involuntary mental healthcare users.
  • Consider periodic reports on the mental health status of mentally ill prisoners.

The new mental health review boards will replace the current boards whose term of office is coming to an end.

In order to be considered for appointment, a nominee must be South African, be a mental healthcare practitioner or a magistrate, an attorney or an advocate admitted in terms of the law of the Republic of South Africa and a member of the community concerned.
