Sudden disappearance of Ballito post boxes leaves clients wondering where to go

The permanent closure of the post office on August 14 has left many unsure as to how they are going to receive their mail.

The sudden closure of the post office and removal of postboxes in Ballito lower village has shocked many residents.

The permanent closure of the post office on August 14 has left many unsure as to how they are going to receive their mail.

“I have lived here for 50 years, and my post box has just been removed with no warning, how am I meant to receive mail?” asked Ballito resident Brenda Berthelson.

The acting branch manager at Umhlali Post Office, Dhilip Premlall confirmed that notices were posted.

He said the closure was caused by a change of ownership of the building.

“By the time we took over the centre the post office had already closed. I assume their lease expired at the same time as the previous owners,” said new landlord Gerard de Billot.

“There was post left which I took up to the new post office at the Lifestyle Centre, and I have not had any dealings with them since.”

Residents who had mail delivered to the Ballito Post Office can now collect recorded mail, which includes packages, from the Zimbali Post Office at the Ballito Lifestyle Centre.

All other post is being held at the Umhlali Post Office and residents are able to collect it there, said Premlall.

Long queues outside the Umhlali branch for SASSA grants may deter residents who are not sure if they will be served, said Berthelson.

“There are many people waiting whenever I visit the location, and as I am elderly and there are not many masks being worn, it seems to be an unnecessary danger,” she said.

Premlall confirmed that safety posters will be in place soon and that there are separate lines for those who just want to pick up their mail.

“Residents are able to come straight into the post office where we can help them to collect their outstanding mail,” he said.

For those who are still wanting to maintain a post box, there are spaces available at the Umhlali branch, he said.

If residents are still worried about the potential danger of in-person collection, home delivery can be arranged if there is a post box available, said Premlall.

The cost of a post box is paid upfront for the year, and residents are also unsure if refunds will be issued, said Berthelson.

The cost is R535 for the year, or R340 for pensioners.

The North Coast Courier is waiting for comment from the post office on whether refunds will be issued.
