Blue Bulls’ Jacques van Rooyen suspended for one match after controversial red card

The Blue Bulls' loosehead prop, Jacques van Rooyen, was tried by a disciplinary panel of SA Rugby and it was decided that he should be suspended for one game after he received a very controversial red card from referee AJ Jacobs last Saturday against WP.

The circus surrounding the controversial red card that Bulls loosehead prop Jacques van Rooyen received from referee AJ Jacobs last week continues, Pretoria Rekord reports.

Van Rooyen has been handed a one match suspension after attending a SA Rugby disciplinary hearing earlier this week.

The popular prop was red carded for an alleged dangerous tackle on Western Province fullback Warrick Gelant in the second half of their Carling Currie Cup match last weekend.

The infringement was deemed to be an entry level offence, which saw the two-week ban being reduced to one week.

The 34-year-old front rower will thus miss the Carling Currie Cup match against the Toyota Free State Cheetahs on Saturday, 5 November 2020.

South African referees have for weeks endured severe criticism from rugby fans and experts, after a series of controversial decisions and generally poor handling of matches.

Saturday’s controversial red card to Van Rooyen especially made rugby fans’ blood boil, after the TV referee’s initial recommendation was ignored by the referee. After that, the referee – who could not see the incident on replay, as the big screen was off at Newlands – led the TV referee in their conversation to change his initial finding.
