Record-making Downs to lift 11th PSL title this weekend

Sundowns’ 11th title is a record for SA football as no other team has won more league titles than the Pretoria club.

Premier Soccer League (PSL) champions Mamelodi Sundowns will lift their 11th league title on Sunday after their match with Cape Town City.

The Pretoria giants clinched the title for the fourth consecutive season following their 3-1 win against SuperSport United last week.

Having already been crowned champions with three games to go in the league, coach Manqoba Mngqithi gave a few young players a run during Downs matches against Swallows and Bloemfontein Celtic.

The Brazilians also set the record for being the first team in the PSL era to go the entire season without an away defeat.

“The first championship we won with coach Pitso Mosimane was here in this stadium (Loftus Versveld). We were playing against SuperSport and we wanted to replicate that and win it in a derby. When you win it in a derby it’s nicer, it gives you a little bit of more pride,” said Mngqithi.
