One person was killed while several others were injured after a truck ploughed into a broken-down bakkie on the N2 northbound just after the Kwamashu Highway outside Durban on Friday morning.

Emer-G-Med spokesperson Kyle van Reenen said at just after 08:30. paramedics responded to the horrific collision involving a truck.

Van Reenen said it was established that the bakkie had broken down in the emergency lane and while mechanics were working on it, a truck rammed into the scene.

He said a man in his 40s was declared dead on arrival of paramedics while at least four other men were treated for injuries ranging from minor to moderate and then taken to nearby hospitals.

Van Reenen said the SAPS, who were also at the scene, will be conducting the necessary investigation.

The road is notorious for fatal accidents.

On October 22, five people were killed in a horrific head-on collision near Tugela.

At the time of the incident, IPSS Medical Rescue’s Dylan Meyrick told Zululand Observer, the sedan had eight occupants, five of which were deceased on impact.

“Three others were injured – two in a critical condition and one with minor injuries. They were transported to a local facility for further care. The bakkie had two occupants, who were treated for serious injuries and transported to a local facility,” he said at the time.
