Joburg mayor gives health department ultimatum over R240m municipal bill

A letter about the outstanding bill to Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi allegedly remains unanswered with the City of Johannesburg saying it plans to cut off services.

Johannesburg Mayor Mpho Phalatse has given the Gauteng Department of Health until today to settle its R240m municipal bill or face cut-offs.

According to Phalatse during a briefing on Wednesday about the City of Johannesburg’s finances ahead of council, previous attempts to get payment from the provincial department have not yielded any results.

“On November 15, the city wrote to Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, outlining debts owed to the city by provincial departments and entities.”

Phalatse noted that the correspondence has not been responded to so the city will commence with the termination of services.

The city continues Buya Mthetho operations in an effort to collect more outstanding revenue owed.

Phalatse encourages residents and businesses across the city with outstanding amounts to pay their municipal bills.

Recent Buya Mthetho revenue collection operations by the Revenue Shared Services Centre saw an estimated R150m in unpaid municipal bills collected.

Account holders who may be struggling to fulfil payments can come to any of the city’s walk-in centres to make a payment arrangement.

“Make sure you apply for all the rebates or programmes for which you qualify, including the Extended Social Package for indigent households.”
