An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of a crash that claimed the lives of 18 people in KZN last night.

A major crash on the N3 on the Van Reenen Pass in KZN claimed the lives of 18 people last night, Northern Natal News reports.

A truck, minibus and light motor vehicle were involved in a crash that resulted in the deaths of 13 adults and five children. A baby was seriously injured in the accident.

The cause of the crash is unknown and will be subject to ongoing investigation.

Siboniso Duma, MEC for Transport and Human Settlements in KZN, confirmed the news in a media statement.

“We wish to send our deepest condolences to the families of the victims. I have requested a comprehensive report from our dedicated RTI team.

“We issued a statement today indicating that since last night, we have noticed an increase in road accidents along the N3, N2 and other routes as a result of heavy rainfall. In addition, we have received reports of heavy rainfall in low lying areas. This will result in possible flooding of houses.”

The Citizen reported that the N3 Toll Concession (N3TC) spokesperson, Thania Dhoogra, said traffic was stacked between the Pyramids Motel and Van Reenen Town while emergency services attended to the scene.

Dhoogra said traffic was heavily backed up in the area of the crash.

“Reports have also been received of poor weather, heavy mist, and dangerous driving conditions in the area. It is strongly recommended that road users delay travel to this section of the N3 Toll Route until further notice.
