Luke Fleurs’ murder trial set for March in Johannesburg

The men accused of murdering soccer player Luke Fleurs face charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances, murder, unlawful possession of an unlicensed firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition.

The six accused of the murder and hijacking of Kaizer Chiefs player Luke Fleurs made another appearance in the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.

Fleurs (24), at the peak of his career, was shot and killed before his car was hijacked at a petrol station in Constantia Park on April 3 last year. It was later confirmed, after investigations, that Fleurs suffered a gunshot wound to the chest.

Ndumiso Mswane (26), Fernando Sive (25), Nhlakanipho Dlamini (21), Franky Xaba (25), Maredi Mphahlele (36) and Thembinkosi Hlomikhawu were arrested in Slovoville, Soweto, on April 10 after the Provincial Investigating Unit and police received information on the whereabouts of Fleurs’ vehicle.

The Director of Public Prosecutions drafted an indictment to the High Court to proceed with the trial, which was thoroughly explained to the six accused during their appearance.

They currently face charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances, murder, unlawful possession of an unlicensed firearm, and unlawful possession of ammunition.

The trial is set to take place in the Johannesburg High Court on March 7.
