Limpopo man sentenced to 15 years for attempted rape of vulnerable woman

Police praised the swift actions of community members and investigators that led to a man's arrest and conviction.

Dr Papo Chuene (29) has been sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment for the attempted rape of a woman with an intellectual disability (34) in Sengatane village, which falls under the Seshego policing area in Limpopo.

Polokwane Review reports that the incident happened on May 26, 2024, when the victim was on her way to a local spaza shop.

Chuene called her, and when she ignored him, he grabbed her and dragged her to a corner where he attempted to rape her.

The woman screamed for help, and members of the public in a passing taxi rushed to her rescue.

Chuene fled the scene, and the matter was reported to the police.

Following an intensive manhunt, Chuene was arrested the next day at a hideout in the same village.

The Limpopo police say the case was later transferred to the Seshego Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit, with Constable Rotshidzwa Mafadza leading the investigation.

“After several court appearances, Chuene was convicted and sentenced last Friday, in the Seshego Regional Court,” police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba says.

Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe welcomed the verdict, stating: “This conviction is a clear demonstration that the police will continue to ensure justice for victims, especially the most vulnerable in our communities.

“Criminals who prey on women and children will face the full might of the law.”
