Woman assaulted and robbed in ‘rare’ uMhlanga nature reserve attack
Security has been heightened at the reserve following a midday robbery, reportedly the first of its kind in more than a decade.
A woman was assaulted and robbed while walking the nature trail in the uMhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve yesterday afternoon (April 24). The incident occurred at approximately midday; it is believed the assailant may have entered the reserve from the M4, reports Northglen News.
“It was established that the victim was accosted by a man armed with a knife while using the trail. The suspect robbed her of her belongings before fleeing the scene,” said KZN VIP Emergency Medical spokesperson, Gareth Naidoo.
Despite her injuries, the woman managed to reach Lagoon Drive, where she sought help from passing motorists. Emergency services were contacted and arrived shortly after.
Durban North SAPS attended the scene, though the victim was severely traumatised and had not yet made a statement before being transported to hospital.
While Northglen News is awaiting official comment from KZN Wildlife, it is understood that security patrols at the 26-hectare reserve have been increased. Incidents of this nature are exceptionally rare at the site, with local sources suggesting this is the first such attack in over ten years.
