Six arrested in Tarlton for alleged hijacking and police impersonation

Police seized blue lights, false registration plates and a signal-jamming device during the arrest of six alleged hijacking syndicate members on the West Rand.

A multidisciplinary law enforcement operation involving the SAPS Crime Intelligence Head Office and Gauteng Traffic Police led to the arrest of six suspects believed to be linked to a truck and delivery van hijacking syndicate on Wednesday, June 3.

Acting on intelligence, officers received information about a syndicate allegedly involved in a series of truck and delivery van hijackings, reports Krugersdorp News.

The suspects were reportedly using two vehicles – a BMW 1 Series and a Jetour Dashing SUV – to carry out the crimes.

According to Gauteng Department of Community Safety spokesperson Ofentse Morwane, a co-ordinated operation was launched, with teams deployed to Tarlton in search of the identified vehicles.

During the operation, officers spotted both suspected vehicles travelling along the R24 in Tarlton. The alleged hijackers were reportedly attempting to stop a truck while using blue lights to impersonate law enforcement officials.

Morwane said the operational plan was executed, resulting in both vehicles being intercepted and all occupants apprehended.

“Six suspects were arrested at the scene. A search of the vehicles led to the seizure of several items, including blue lights, a signal-jamming device, handcuff-type cable ties, multiple sets of false registration plates and several cellphones,” said Morwane.

Further investigations are underway as the suspects are believed to be linked to several truck and delivery van hijackings committed in Gauteng and neighbouring provinces.
